Your Park Mesa Community Council has been working hard in 2019 to keep you informed about key issues and events such as job opportunities, summer camp, backyard home design, senior housing, Crenshaw Crossing updates, construction detours, Cool Streets and more.

6521 BrynhurstWe have brought a lot of speakers and topics before the community so we can explore issues together and find solutions, particularly to preventing negative impacts of Transit Oriented Communities construction of oversized apartments looming over single story residences. We focused our attention on a proposal for 6521 Brynhurst to build 41 units in five stories, replacing single story construction. Due to the diligent work of PMHCC with Councilmember Harris-Dawson this proposal and the one for Dorset Village are currently stalled. We must remain diligent as these projects will continue to be proposed and if completed, would change our quality of life.

Another issue we are passionate about is better education for our youth and the elimination of wanding and random searches which make our children feel like criminal suspects rather that students aspiring to greatness.

Julia Smith & Edna

PMHCC At-Large Rep. Julia Smith and Edna at South Victoria Park.

At PMHCC we put our money where our mouth is by funding education, community support and local events:

  • Dynasty’s United Youth after school tutoring at Hyde Park Library
  • STEM tutoring
  • Crenshaw High School Program on writing books
  • My Friend’s House Fall Wellness Fair
  • 43rd Crenshaw book bag giveaway
  • 5 mile run for homelessness

Having vibrant green spaces is key for our community’s health and well being and we were excited to participate in the development and grand opening of South Victoria Ave Park. This little gem has completely remade a nuisance property.

Hyde Park Mural Grand OpeningCommunity identity is a touchstone of community pride. We were excited to celebrate the addition of the Heart of Hyde Park Mural in May to Our Mighty Contribution Mural as defining elements of our community.

We are currently working on directing the funds from the space shuttle initiative to two important efforts in our community and would like to host a County Supervisor Candidate Forum in the coming year.

2020“We are queued up to tackle significant challenges in this new decade. Don’t stand idly by!” encourages PMHCC President Kahllid Al-Alim. As 2020 dawns bold and bright, we invite you to come to a meeting and get involved in the Park Mesa Heights Community Council.
